Canyoning
in Tenerife

Enter into these magical places

The island keeps its best landscapes where no road reaches — and the only way in is down.

Canyoning in Tenerife takes you into narrow volcanic gorges, orange rock walls and laurel forest hidden from every viewpoint and hiking trail. You abseil, downclimb and in the aquatic canyons, slide and swim your way down the watercourse from top to bottom.

It doesn't matter whether you have canyoned before or this is your first time. Our qualified guides hand out the equipment and teach you the technique before you enter the canyon, and stay with you on every abseil, so you can move through it with confidence and simply enjoy the descent. If you have never been canyoning, start with Los Arcos or La Orchilla.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need previous experience to go canyoning?

For four of our six descents, no. El Lerito, Los Arcos, La Orchilla and Anaga are open to people with no previous experience at all: before entering the canyon your guide hands out the equipment and explains the progression techniques and the safety rules, and stays with you on every abseil.

A reasonable level of fitness helps. For Lomo Alferez, an intermediate route, you must have completed a descent before.

Los Carrizales is a different story. It is six to seven hours of aquatic canyoning, with jumps, natural slides and swimming sections, plus a return leg over fairly steep ground. Being in average shape is not enough here: a very good level of fitness is essential, along with regular sports practice. If that is not your case, choose another descent and you will enjoy it far more.

What is the minimum age?

It depends on the canyon, because the technical demands vary a lot:

  • Barranco del Lerito — from age 10. The best choice for families.
  • Barranco de Los Arcos — from age 13.
  • Barranco de La Orchilla — from age 13.
  • Barranco Anaga — from age 14.
  • Barranco Lomo Alferez — from age 16.
  • Los Carrizales — from age 16. You need to be able to swim and be in very good physical shape.

On all of them it is essential not to suffer from vertigo, since you move at height.

What is the difference between a dry and an aquatic canyon?

In a dry canyon there is no water running through it: you abseil down rock walls wearing normal mountain clothing. That is the case for five of our six descents.

In an aquatic canyon there is water flow, so you wear a wetsuit and you get natural slides, jumps and pools. In Tenerife the classic one is Los Carrizales, in the Teno Rural Park. It is more fun, but also the most demanding.

What is included in the price?

All our activities include:

  • A qualified professional canyoning guide.
  • Individual, canyoning-specific equipment: harness, helmet, ropes and, on the aquatic routes, a wetsuit.
  • Accident, rescue and civil liability insurance.
  • Group first-aid kit and all technical and safety equipment.
  • Access permits for the canyon.
  • Photo report of the activity.
What do I need to bring?

The essential item is footwear: hiking boots or trail running shoes with good grip. Road running shoes and everyday footwear are not allowed, because the approach and the canyon itself run over uneven ground. If you do not have any, we rent boots for €10 — just let us know when you book.

Also: water (1.5 litres minimum), some food such as fruit or energy bars, comfortable mountain clothing suited to the weather, a backpack with a chest or waist strap, and your personal medication if you need it.

Can I cancel or change the date?

Yes. With more than 24 hours' notice, changes and cancellations are free of charge and you get a 100% refund of your booking within 3 to 15 calendar days.

If the weather is bad we call you as early as possible to save you the trip, and you choose between a new date or a full refund.

What is the best time of year?

The dry canyons run all year round, thanks to the island's climate: El Lerito, Los Arcos, La Orchilla, Anaga and Lomo Alferez are available in any month.

Los Carrizales, being aquatic, depends on the water flow and temperature. The best periods are September to November and February to July.

Where do we meet and how do I get there?

Each canyon has its own meeting point. You will find a Google Maps link on each activity page, and again once your booking is confirmed. We usually set off at 9:30 am.

We do not provide transport to the meeting points, so you need your own or a rental vehicle to get there. If you are travelling without a car, write to us and we will suggest the best option.
